The most common question we receive is simple: “How many days do I need for the desert?” The answer depends on what you want to see and how much driving you are willing to do. Here is a straightforward comparison of the three most popular formats.
The comparison table
| 2 days | 3 days | 4 days | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Desert reached | Zagora (small dunes) | Merzouga – Erg Chebbi | Merzouga – Erg Chebbi |
| Nights | 1 night in a desert camp | 1 hotel + 1 desert camp | Hotel + camp + a third night (camp, hotel or kasbah) |
| Driving | About 7 h each day | Two long days and one very long return day (about 10 h) | Shorter driving days |
| Ait Ben Haddou | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Dades & Todra | No | Yes | Yes |
| Free time in the dunes | Sunset and sunrise | Sunset and sunrise | A full day or a different return route |
| Best for | Short stays | Most travellers | Families, photographers, slower travel |
The 2-day tour: Zagora
Two days do not leave enough time to reach Merzouga and come back comfortably, so 2-day tours go to Zagora instead. You cross the High Atlas, visit Ait Ben Haddou, follow the palm-lined Draa Valley and ride camels to a camp near Zagora. It is a lovely introduction to southern Morocco. However, be clear about the dunes: they are modest, not the high Sahara dunes of the photos. Choose this format if your stay in Marrakech is short or if the journey matters more to you than the dunes themselves. See the 2 Days Marrakech to Zagora Desert Tour.
The 3-day tour: Merzouga, the classic choice
Three days is the minimum for Erg Chebbi. Day one ends in the Dades Valley after Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate. Day two visits the Todra Gorge and arrives in Merzouga for a sunset camel ride and a night at camp. Day three is the long drive back to Marrakech. The itinerary is intense but rewarding, and it covers all the major sights. If you continue your trip in the north, the one-way 3 Days Marrakech to Fes via the Sahara avoids the return drive altogether.

The 4-day tour: the same highlights, more breathing space
A fourth day changes the rhythm of the trip. You can either spend a full day around Merzouga (Khamlia’s Gnawa musicians, Rissani’s market, a 4×4 loop of the dunes, a second night at camp) or return to Marrakech by a different road through Alnif, N’Kob and the Draa Valley, which splits the long return into two comfortable days. Our 4 Days Marrakech to Merzouga Desert Tour uses that southern return route, while the 4 Days Marrakech to Fes Desert Tour adds a full desert day before continuing to Fes.
Which one should you choose?
- You have only two free days → Zagora.
- You want the real Sahara dunes and have three days → Merzouga in 3 days.
- You travel with children or older relatives, or you hate long drives → 4 days or more.
- You continue to Fes or the north → a one-way crossing from Marrakech to Fes.

Frequently asked questions
Is the 3-day tour too tiring?
The last day is long, but with a private driver you can stop whenever you need. If you are worried about fatigue, the 4-day version is the better choice.
Can I add a second night in the desert?
Yes. Any Merzouga itinerary can be extended with an extra night at camp or in a hotel at the foot of the dunes. Just mention it in your request.
