A desert tour is the trip most travellers to Marrakech dream about: crossing the High Atlas, walking through mud-brick kasbahs, riding a camel into the dunes at sunset and sleeping under a sky full of stars. But “desert tour from Marrakech” covers very different journeys. Some are two fast days to the edge of the Sahara, others are slow week-long loops through valleys and oases. This guide explains the main options so you can pick the one that really fits your holiday.
Start with the most important question: which desert?
Almost every Marrakech desert tour goes to one of two areas. The choice between them shapes everything else: the driving time, the scenery and the kind of dunes you will see.
Zagora and the Draa Valley
Zagora is the closest desert area to Marrakech, roughly seven hours of driving with stops. The road crosses the Tizi n’Tichka pass, visits Ait Ben Haddou and then follows the Draa Valley, one of the longest palm groves in Morocco. The dunes near Zagora are small compared with the classic Sahara images, but the journey itself is beautiful. It is the realistic choice if you only have two days.
Merzouga and Erg Chebbi
Merzouga sits next to Erg Chebbi, a sea of tall orange dunes that looks like the Sahara of postcards. It is much further from Marrakech (around 560 km), so it needs at least three days. On the way you pass Ait Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate, the Dades Valley and the Todra Gorge, which means the drive is part of the experience rather than dead time.

How many days do you really need?
- 2 days: Zagora only. A good taste of southern Morocco for travellers short on time.
- 3 days: the classic Merzouga round trip, or a one-way crossing from Marrakech to Fes through the Sahara.
- 4 days: the same highlights at a calmer pace, with more time in the dunes or a different return route.
- 5 days or more: desert plus valleys, hikes, kasbah nights and, if you like, the imperial cities.
We compare these durations in detail in our article 2-Day vs 3-Day vs 4-Day Desert Tours from Marrakech.
Round trip or one way to Fes?
If your Morocco itinerary continues to Fes, Chefchaouen or the north, a one-way desert crossing saves you a full day of backtracking. From Merzouga, the road to Fes climbs through the Ziz Valley, Midelt and the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas around Ifrane. Our 3 Days Marrakech to Fes via the Sahara is built exactly for this. If you fly home from Marrakech, a round trip such as the 3 Days Marrakech to Merzouga Desert Tour is simpler.
Private or shared tour?
Shared group tours fill a minibus with travellers from different hotels and follow a fixed program. They are usually the cheapest way to see the desert. A private tour gives you your own vehicle and driver: you decide when to leave, where to stop for photos and how long to stay in each place. For families, couples, photographers and anyone who dislikes rushing, private travel makes long driving days much more comfortable. Tell us which format you prefer when you request a quote.
Choose your desert camp carefully
Desert camps range from simple Berber tents with shared bathrooms to luxury camps with private en-suite tents, proper beds and heating in winter. The camp is often the most memorable part of the trip, so it is worth asking what is included: private or shared bathroom, electricity, blankets, dinner and breakfast, and how you reach the camp (camel, 4×4 or on foot).
Practical checklist before you book
- Do you finish in Marrakech, Fes or elsewhere?
- How many hours of driving per day feel comfortable for you or your children?
- Which season are you travelling in? Desert nights are cold in winter and days are very hot in summer (see best time to visit the Sahara).
- What level of accommodation do you want in towns and in the desert?
- Are there activities you want to add, such as a quad ride, a 4×4 excursion or a visit to Khamlia village?
Our recommendation in one sentence
If you can spare three days, choose Merzouga. If you can spare four, go even slower. Choose Zagora only when two days is truly all you have. You can browse every itinerary on our Tours from Marrakech and Desert Tours pages, or let us design a route for you with our tailor-made service.
Frequently asked questions
Is a desert tour from Marrakech worth it?
Yes, for most travellers. The driving is long, but it crosses some of Morocco’s most spectacular scenery, and a night in the dunes is unlike anything you will experience in the cities.
Can I do the Sahara as a day trip from Marrakech?
Not the real Sahara. The closest option for a day is the stony Agafay Desert, about an hour from Marrakech. It offers camel rides and sunsets with Atlas views, but no large sand dunes.
