Khamlia Village and Traditional Gnawa Music Experience
Overview
Khamlia is a small village a few kilometres south of Merzouga. Many of its families descend from people brought across the Sahara from sub-Saharan Africa, and the village has become known for preserving Gnawa music, a spiritual tradition of trance rhythms played on drums, the guembri lute and metal castanets called qraqeb.
During the visit, musicians welcome you with mint tea and a live performance, and often invite guests to join in. It is a joyful and moving encounter with an important part of Moroccan culture. The visit is easily combined with a 4×4 safari or a desert tour.
