Overview

Just an hour south of Fes, the Middle Atlas feels like another country. Ifrane, built in the 1930s with sloping roofs and gardens, is often called “the Switzerland of Morocco” and is one of the coolest towns in the country in summer, sometimes snowy in winter.

Beyond Ifrane, the cedar forest around Azrou is one of the largest in North Africa and home to Barbary macaques, an endangered species. You walk among the trees, then visit Azrou, a Berber market town known for its cedar-wood crafts. Lakes such as Dayet Aoua can be added when they hold water.
